Race' Round Faulkner's Island

“Time flies when you’re having fun”. There’s no other way to describe the ‘Round Faulkner Island Sailing Regatta comprised of sailors from Long Island Sound. Eleven years have flown by since the first regatta in 1998, yet the event is still packed with the same spirited yet fun competition between boats and crews as it was in the early years. The original concept of the regatta was born on a lazy fall afternoon with some sailors sitting around talking. Wouldn’t it be fun to have a race that locally signifies the end of the sailing season on Long Island Sound. September traditionally offers great sailing weather.
The First Annual was made up of 5 boats from Branford and West Haven. The event now attracts over 25 entries every year. The regatta is a “for fun” regatta. Entrants are encouraged to sail in a manner that promotes safety. Avid and novice participants enjoy the 19 nautical mile regatta around historic Faulkner Island. The regatta starts just north of “Cow and Calf”, a red buoy south of the Branford River. The first mark (turn) is “Green 15”, a buoy just north of Faulkner Island. The fleet keeps the east side of Faulkner Island to their starboard. Once on the south side of Faulkner Island the fleet keeps the Goose Island Lighted Bell “10GI” to starboard. Then the boats and crews race back to the north side of Cow and Calf in Branford for the finish. While the fleet has grown , the ‘Round Faulkner Island Sailing Regatta continues to offer a great day of sailing on Long Island Sound for skippers and crew alike.
This year the ‘Round Faulkner Island Sailing Regatta has merged with Hospice to become the Connecticut Hospice Regatta “RACE ‘ROUND FAULKNER’S ISLAND.
This year the regatta will be held on September 24, 2011. Entries sailing for an official finish position rig their boats for “Cruising Class only”.
Overall it is a perfect day for a challenging sail on Long Island Sound. Every year crews comment on the regatta being one of the best sails they have had all season.
The official finishing positions are scored using PHRF (Performance Handicap Racing Fleet) handicaps. The PHRF rating for a boat is used to try to even up the fleet so that a smaller or slower boat will have an equal chance of winning the event.
The awards will be handed out at the 35th Anniversary of Hospice Clam Bake held Saturday September 26th, 2009 on the grounds of Hospice, located at 100 Double Beach Rd in Branford.
